This photograph was taken of Church St in the 19309s the shop on the left was W1 Asplin and Son butchers. I am 90% certain that the small girl on pavement is Olive Bell who lived a few doors up the road. She is clutching a parcel, perhaps she has been to the butchers shop.

Mammy Dugdale's famous sweet shop, the home of Clag'em is on the left with a board outside, below the cottage with the girls sitting on the step I don't know who they would be.
The Curio shop on the right was Miss Lupton's this must have followed Hesmondhalgh's coal-merchant.

With the small amount of traffic, one car and one cart, it is little wonder that we could play safely round the big tree which was felled in 1952
